Lip frenulum (usually the upper lip) connects with the front teeth and the upper lip.

Lip frenulum causes a gap to develop between the front teeth, which is easy to notice if you lift the child’s upper lip.

I recommend to perform the lip frenulum surgery after the eruption of cuspids, as these teeth will make this gap to close by itself.

However, often it happens that the lip frenulum does not move, leaving and forming a space between the front teeth. Should you see a wide attachment, it is appropriate to visit doctors for advice as soon as possible, without waiting for all teeth levelling.

This surgery is applied in several situations:

  • To remove a diastema – the space between the front teeth;
  • For the purposes of orthodontic treatment.

Tongue frenulum surgery is not complicated and painful.

The treatment is surgical, performed under local anaesthesia, so the patient does not feel any pain.

The operation involves careful removal of part of the lip frenulum which causes the space between the front teeth, sometimes extra plastic will be required.

The wound is sutured. The procedure takes about half an hour.

After surgery:

  • You may feel yourself uncomfortable for the first few days;
  • Possible swelling;
  • Requires adequate oral hygiene;
  • If you feel pain, take pain medication that will be prescribed by your physician;
  • After 7-10 days you will have to remove sutures.
